Tom,
One is marked “Light”, the other “IGN”. I assume it is for some sort of remote shut off, and to power some other light, maybe navigation light? Really never seen anything like this. This is the “salt water” edition with lots of bronze, so maybe it was a sailboat thing?
I found a replacement mag plate on FleaBay, so I will wait to take the mag apart to be sure things are the same.

March 30, 2026 at 6:23 pm #313061David, I did not see any articles on the NS model in the archives.
Maybe when you get the magneto figured all out you can submit
an article for the magazine. Enquiring minds want to know!
Now I want one!Prepare to be boarded!
March 30, 2026 at 6:46 pm #313072The jacks were provided as a convenience. The “IGN terminal was for (I believe) hooking up a battery if the magneto needed a boost for easier starting in cold damp weather. The LIGHT terminal may or may not have been for a battery boost to the light as well, I can’t swear to it. I do know that on the N’s that I’ve had, I got the light working but it was (like myself) not terribly bright and I’m not sure how much good it would have done. As a night fishermans aid, I have doubts about how useful it would have been, because you did have to run the motor in order to have the light working. I’ll leave it to your imagination about what kind of task was doable with both hands occupied running the motor…
Here’s an extremely low quality video clip of a running model NS with the light (sort of) functioning
and some other pics of the same motor

Thanks for the info and the video. I’m not planning on sending a Bat Signal with the lights, more of a curiosity than anything.
Not sure about it being a “23” either just thought it has the early style tank.

March 30, 2026 at 9:58 pm #313110With a serial number above 10000, yours is a 1926 model. The NS’s all used the brass tank, but the aluminum lower unit N switch to the pressed aluminum tank in 1924 (I think, sorta, kinda). Tom Manley might be able to give you better insight on that.
The one in my demo video was just above 9000, which made it a 1925.

In this link to an earlier thread, Tom describes some of what makes a 1923 . From his postings he seem to be very knowledgeable on all variations of the model “N” Sportwin’s. At the present time we don’t have the ability to PM someone so you’re not able to contacted him. Maybe he will see this thread and respond. https://www.aomci.org/forums/topic/evinrude-model-n-tank-color-and-shift-mechanism
A "Boathouse Repair" is one thats done without having tools or the skills to do it properly.

March 31, 2026 at 7:32 am #313174I had a suspicion the salt water model may have used the brass/copper tank later than 23.
Thanks for the serial number information.

March 31, 2026 at 12:13 pm #313225Today I disassembled the rest including the powerhead. Top ring in each piston was partially stuck, but bores and pistons look good. I will free them up fully and reassemble.
Some pics showing all the brass/bronze parts. Plenty of opportunity to shine things up.
I am avoiding messing with the magneto at all cost! I need to be able to give that 100% attention.
