I usually line up one “base ring” bolt hole with one mag plate bolt hole using a sishkabob stick.. after the first bolt is in the rest line up easy. Base ring is flat side up taper side down ..I think…. but if you are not certain wait for confirmation by others . oil the cam oiler wick ! I use 2 drops GC oil
…clip is $$$$ ! don’t loose it
What is GC, and GC oil?

June 14, 2026 at 12:08 pm #322017Thank you! I’m not new to boating, just motors. I’ve been canoeing and sailing for about 30 years, but never had a boat with an engine.
Thanks for the link. I have downloaded that already just haven’t had much time to look at it.
Will any 90 weight oil suffice, is there a special marine type?June 14, 2026 at 1:04 pm #322021There are special marine lower unit oils that are said to be formulated a bit differently for the challenges of marine life….and supposedly better able to handle small amounts of water intrusion.
Initially I would just use a good quality 90 oil and monitor it closely for the first few runs to see if it turns milky (water intrusion). If no water intrusion….then you might opt for the better stuff…..
Those gearcases frequently leak (the shift shaft seal is the most common culprit….but there are seals on the driveshaft and prop shaft as well.) All available if you decide to go thru the gearcase.

June 14, 2026 at 1:42 pm #322024wally mart marine gc oil is ok …..some folks don’t bother with seals if not terrebly bad they just replace the oil mid season.. resealing a GC is tricky but ok after a while when you do a few ….. lots of utubes
dropping the GC on a 5.5 involves other tricky stuff so changing oil may be simpler

June 15, 2026 at 2:48 pm #322110I’m preparing to install a new impeller, and I can’t remember the orientation of the old one when I took it out. I’m thinking it should be installed as if it were spinning counterclockwise when looking down on it, which would be clockwise when looking up into the water pump housing. Is this correct?
